What I love so much about the connection between Harry Potter and Oxford is that Rowling came and got so much inspiration here. From characters, names, dress, and Hogwarts itself. Just walking the streets makes you feel like you're on a movie set. Except it's real life!

I live in Oxford, England and I've taken dozens of Harry Potter tours and explored as much as I can. While London boasts an amazing array of Harry Potter filming locations and of course, the Warner Brother's Studio Tour, if you love the movie, Oxford is the best spot.

We could just switch Oxford's name to “Ox-warts” at this point! (That's Oxford + Hogwarts combined.)

It's hard to tell what I've done more: explored the historic streets of Oxford, or watched the enchanting world of Harry Potter unfold on screen. The magical series is one of my all-time favorites, capturing the essence of adventure and wonder. From the majestic architecture of Hogwarts to the charming nooks of Diagon Alley, Harry Potter’s universe is intricately tied to the real-world charm of Oxford. The city’s timeless beauty and academic grandeur made it the perfect backdrop for many iconic scenes in the films.

Where was Harry Potter filmed in Oxford? The city of Oxford, with its historic university buildings, was the perfect setting for some of the most iconic and mesmerizing scenes from the Harry Potter films. These stunning locations not only brought the magic to life but also inspired the filmmakers to create larger-scale sets at Warner Bros. Studios here in the UK.

Here are the places that Harry Potter was filmed. BUT, please note: all of the college require entrance fees and have hours. Which means you have to plan ahead of time. Many of the places do require that you come on a tour so if you want to go on a tour, I suggest you book in advance. Below I list my favorite tours.

Footprints Harry Potter Tour of Oxford – I've done this one a few times and is my top recommendation. They have lots of tours and are hosted by students at the university.

Oxford Harry Potter Tour with Entrance to Christ Church—This is probably one of the most popular tours, as you get to see THE inspiration for the Great Hall. This is also one of the biggest colleges, so it's quite grand!

Oxford Harry Potter with Access to the Divinity School – Another super popular one as this gives you access to the Divinity School where the hospital scenes were filmed.

Oxford Harry Potter Tour with Entrance to New College – I love New College. It's so beautiful and a great setting for exploring. This is where the Malfoy tree is as well as well as cloisters where many scenes were filmed.

Studio Tour And Oxford Day Trip – If you're coming from London this tour is perfect. It gives you access to the studio plus a guided tour of Oxford.

Oxford Guided Tour – a general history tour of Oxford that is so so so fascinating!

Blenheim Palace Admission ticket – This is where the scene was filmed with Snape and James was filmed. The palace itself is magnificent and worth the 20 minute trip.

Oxford Ghost Tour—If you want something a little different, I really like this ghost tour! It usually doesn't sell out, which is a huge plus! It's also nice it goes at night.

Christ Church

Christ Church is usually most associated with Harry Potter as so many significant and iconic scenes were filmed here! It was also the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland as Lewis Carroll was a math tutor here.

Please note that Christ Church requires an entrance fee. Visiting Christ Church can be a bit pricey at £16 per adult, but if you're a Harry Potter fan, it's absolutely worth it! The place truly looks and feels like Hogwarts. Just be sure to book your tour in advance. You can do so here directly or part of a tour.

PRO TIP: You can actually spend the night at Christ Church! During university vacation periods, Christ Church opens up some of its historic rooms to overnight guests. Yes — you can literally sleep where Harry Potter was filmed. Waking up inside the college that inspired Hogwarts is about as magical as it gets for a Potter fan. Rooms book up FAST, so reserve well in advance. INFO HERE!

Yes, you even get to eat in the Great Hall. I'm still not over it.

Christ Church Hall – No place else feels like Hogwarts y'all! This magnificent hall served as the inspiration for Hogwarts' Great Hall. Its grandeur, with long wooden tables and high ceilings, mirrors the magical feasts and sorting ceremonies. As you walk through, you can almost hear Dumbledore's welcoming speech.

In truth, many of the dining halls in Oxford Colleges are quite grand! I love Magdalen's!

Christ Church College – Bodley Staircase The iconic staircase is where in the first movie, Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone, Professor McGonagall first greeted Harry, Hermione, and Ron, as well as the rest of the students. Standing on these steps, you can feel the excitement and anticipation of the young wizards entering Hogwarts for the first time. This is right before they enter the great hall and is one of my favorite scenes.

The staircase itself is so magnificent and you can see why the movies were so influenced by Oxford and Christ Church!

The staircase is used in:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher) meet McGonagal, and at the end of the movie as well- Ron and Hermione are at the top and ask if Harry is Alright.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets– when he's late for School and inside Riddle's Diary

Christ Church College Cloisters – We are lucky the studio ended up using so many actual places as scenes for Harry Potter. The reason is they didn't have time to build all the sets. So many of the scenes of the students walking the halls is set in Christ Church Cloisters as well as some other places around Britain.

We also see the cloisters of Christ Church used in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when Hermione shows Harry's dad trophy from Quidditch.

Harry Potter Tree – Blenheim Palace – Head just 20 minutes outside of Oxford to the GLORIOUS Blenheim Palace. Tour the palace and birthplace of Winston Churchill and check out the Harry Potter tree! Not to be confused with the Whomping Willow, this is the tree when Harry sees Snape's memory from Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix.

We see, as Harry does too, Severus Snape at Hogwarts, sitting by this tree. He's reading when James Potter arrives to bully him, casting a spell to make Snape float and threatening to pull his trousers down. Known as “Snape’s Worst Memory”, this moment happens in front of Lily, the love of Snape’s life. This scene is moving and revelatory, showing Snape's vulnerability and giving us a deeper understanding of his character, making us sympathize with him for the first time.

Bodelian Library

Bodleian Library – Divinity School The Divinity School served as the Hogwarts Infirmary aka the hospital. The intricate stonework and vaulted ceilings create a space that’s both majestic and soothing, perfect for recovering from magical mishaps.

This is also where the students practice for the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Ron Dances with McGonagall.

Ron also winds up in the hospital in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince after being poisoned accidentally in Slughorn's office.

PRO TIP: As you go into the Divinity School, look for the statue of the Earl of Pembroke. Look familiar? It looks like Nearly Headless Nick. But it gets even better!

Not only does the statue resemble Nearly Headless Nick, but Rowling also got all her inspiration from him. The bronze statue of William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke stands in front of the main entrance to the Old Bodleian Library, looking across the Quadrangle. Apparently, he and Shakespeare were good friends as well and he was Shakespeare's patron! When the statue was put up, apparently, students didn't like him and tried to remove his head. J.K. Rowling heard this story and used it for Nearly Headless Nick!

Bodleian Library – Duke Humfrey's Library This historic library was used as Hogwarts Library, where Hermione spent countless hours researching spells. The scholarly atmosphere is palpable, making it a must-visit for book lovers and Potter fans alike.

New College

New College – Cloisters Our first glimpse of New College comes during the build-up to the Triwizard Tournament. Remember when Harry seeks out Cedric Diggory to warn him about the dragons in the first task? During these scenes, Harry is quite isolated, with many students sporting ‘Potter Stinks’ badges and even Ron turning against him. These memorable moments are all set within the cloisters and the central courtyard of New College.

There are also a few scenes with students walking through the halls of Hogwarts here.

New College – Courtyard & Tree This tree provided the setting for Draco Malfoy’s memorable encounter with Mad-Eye Moody in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when he's turned into a ferret! You can see the tree going over the top of the walls of the college.

It's also the place where Cedric Diggory and Harry have a chat before the next task.

Of course, just walking around Oxford gives you Hogwarts vibes! But here are a few more.

Broad Street aka Diagon Alley

Broad Street in Oxford, with its bustling atmosphere and eclectic mix of shops, mirrors the magical vibrancy of Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter series. No, it's not quite as crampt, but it has many similar shops including book stores, robe stores, and more.

As you stroll down this historic street, you can almost imagine wizards and witches popping into Ollivanders for a new wand or browsing the latest brooms at Quality Quidditch Supplies. The architecture, with its charming facades and centuries-old buildings, provides a perfect backdrop reminiscent of the wizarding shopping district, making it a must-visit for any Potter enthusiast looking to experience a slice of Diagon Alley in the heart of Oxford.

The Earl of Pembroke State aka Nearly Headless Nick

The Earl of Pembroke College in Oxford holds a special place in Harry Potter lore as the inspiration behind Nearly Headless Nick, the ghostly figure who roams the halls of Hogwarts. I mentioned him above, you really can't miss it when you go to the Divinity School. And 10 points to Gryffindor because it's free and no hours!

Red Telephone Booth

Just near the Divinity School and across the street from the Bridge of Sighs is a PERFECT red telephone booth that looks very similar to the one Harry uses to get into the Ministry of Magic.

Just outside the Sheldonian Theatre, a notable spot in Oxford, lies the inspiration for one of the most iconic symbols in the Harry Potter series: Harry's lightning bolt scar. It was here that J.K. Rowling, while taking in the majestic views and the historical ambiance of Oxford, envisioned the distinctive mark that would forever link Harry to his past and his destiny. She actually was asked by her publisher to give a clearer idea of the scar. And there she saw what is actually a mason's mark!

The Sheldonian Theatre, with its grandeur and historical significance, provided the perfect backdrop for this moment of creative inspiration, making it a landmark of literary history as well as architectural beauty.

St. Mary's Church

I have never heard anyone talk about this! But if you go into St. Mary's Church, which is gorgeous and a great place for the best view of Oxford, look up at the ceiling. What do you see? I see Harry Potter stars that look like the exact stars in the book!

The black and white robes that students wear

Okay, not a place, but you might notice this walking around! During ceremonies such as formals or Matriculation day, students don robes. The black and white robes worn by students at Oxford University bear a striking resemblance to the traditional Hogwarts uniforms, adding a touch of magic to the academic atmosphere of the city. These robes, steeped in tradition and history, create a visual connection between the prestigious university and the fictional school of witchcraft and wizardry. Walking through the university's historic halls and seeing students clad in their scholarly attire, one can't help but feel a part of the magical world, where knowledge and enchantment intertwine seamlessly.

Blackwell's Bookshop

Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford is a paradise for book lovers and a treasure trove for Harry Potter fans. This iconic store, with its vast collection of books and inviting atmosphere, is reminiscent of the magical bookstores like Flourish and Blotts in Diagon Alley. It’s easy to imagine Hermione Granger spending hours here, surrounded by towering stacks of spell books and ancient tomes. Blackwell's has been a cornerstone of Oxford’s literary scene for over a century, and its labyrinthine shelves and rich history make it a perfect stop for anyone looking to delve into the magic of reading.

Turf Tavern – where the Potter crew hung out after filming

Turf Tavern, a historic pub tucked away in a narrow alley in Oxford, was a favorite haunt of the Harry Potter crew after long days of filming. This charming tavern, with its cozy interiors and traditional British pub fare, provided a much-needed retreat for cast and crew to unwind and share stories. The walls of Turf Tavern have witnessed centuries of conversations and camaraderie, and knowing that it played host to the creators of such a beloved series adds an extra layer of magic to this already enchanting spot. Whether you're a Potterhead or just looking for a quintessential Oxford experience, Turf Tavern is the perfect place to relax and soak in the city's rich history.

Magical Shops

There are TONS of magical shops selling Harry Potter trinkets, costumes, and goodies. But my favorite is House of Wonders. It is a beautiful shop and has tons of unqiue things in the store.

I also HIGHLY recommend checking out Scriptum. It's a stationery store that feels magical. The store is literally overflowing with quills, quirky objects and more. Think Flourish and Blotts meets Borgin and Burkes. But not in a dark way.

Laird Hatters – This shop looks like it comes straight from Diagon Alley! And it sells hats!

Visit a College

Many of the colleges feel like Hogwarts and are much cheaper to visit. I personally love Bailliol, Magdalen (their great hall rivals Christ Church's) and they have a deer park, Queen's college, Keble (adore the church!), Exeter, and many more.

Tips for Visiting Harry Potter Locations in Oxford

PLEASE read this before you go! All of the places listed have hours and many have entrance fees. So please plan ahead.

If you want to do a self-guided tour, many of the colleges have certain times they are open. Check their official websites to ensure they are open. For example, Christ Church requires you pay an entrance fee and it's quite expensive.

There are 39 colleges spread throughout the city that make up Oxford. You don't just have to go to New College or Christ Church to get Harry Potter vibes.

If you want to visit a college but don't want to pay, check out Evensong. Various colleges offer this each evening. It's a 30 minute service with a beautiful choir and a chance to go into the colleges with out paying.

Tours often sell out. I suggest booking at least a week in advance.

How to Get from London to Oxford

In truth, it's very easy to get from London to Oxford by taking the train for a short, one hour journey.

Direct services run from London Paddington (serving Oxford station) and London Marylebone (serving Oxford and Oxford Parkway stations).

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the tulip fields to take in the sight of bright, rainbow-colored flowers stretching out across the horizon. From cycling through the tulip fields to exploring the local villages and tulip festivals, there are plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the Netherlands’ colorful tulip culture. In this guide, you will learn how to explore the tulip fields of the Netherlands and make the most of your visit in Holland!

Whether you want to see the tulip fields near Amsterdam, explore the iconic Keukenhof, or just see as many of the brilliant Dutch tulips as possible, this post will help you see all the colorful flower fields!

Something mind blowing happens every March through May in Holland: straight lines stretching for miles of the most brilliant colors you've ever seen come to life. The tulips are in bloom! I knew I had to see these incredible fields and flower displays in person.

I made a plan to head to the Keukenhof in Holland, one of the world's largest flower gardens in Lisse, The Netherlands. I also wanted to try and squeeze the tulip fields around The Netherlands in on the same day.

One didn't happen.

But sometimes the best of plans are the ones that go awry.

Why Are Tulips So Special in The Netherlands?

The Dutch tulip fields have a fascinating history. Tulips arrived in the Netherlands in the 16th century, originating from the Ottoman Empire. By the 17th century, “Tulip Mania” took over, and tulips became one of the most coveted and expensive flowers in Europe. Today, the Netherlands produces over 3 billion tulip bulbs annually, making it the world’s largest exporter.

That's why I've created the ultimate guide to tulips in Holland as well as all the tulip fields around The Netherlands to ensure you make the best plan and get to see as many tulips as possible. In this post, I'll share with you how to see the tulips for free, when and where to see them, guide to Keukenhof, and more!

It was a stunningly gorgeous day in Central Europe. Living in Heidelberg, Germany, we planned to simply drive the five and a half hours from our home to the Keukenhof tulip garden in The Netherlands. However, those plans were foiled when our dog sitter's bus was over 2 hours late. Despite already purchasing tickets to Keukenhof, it closes at 7:30 and we arrived just past 8pm. With the blazing sun setting, we decided instead to head to the tulip fields nearby at sunset.

Doing some quick research, I found that most of the fertile tulip fields were located in Lisse, Flevoland, and Noordoostpolder.

I headed to Flevoland and found a perfect little route of fields stretching for miles which promised an endless sea of tulips. This website actually provides a handy route of where you can stop and admire the tulips as you drive or bike.

I assumed with this gorgeous light and the number of tourists coming to see the tulips the fields would be covered with people. To my delight, we were the only ones, save for a few farmers tending to their tulips, who were admiring the fields.

The colors of the tulips were so vibrant it almost hurts your eyes. Deep saturated reds, bright pigmented yellow, soft flamingo pink, and brilliant orange in straight as an arrow rows blanket the landscape. I’d seen images online and thought for sure the photos were over-saturated with Instagram filters, but I was wrong. It’s hard to capture the amazing colors in person. The colors are so rich I could stare for hours.

Because no one was around it was easy to snap all the pictures your heart could desire of the real tulip farm! Be aware- there are signs to not walk in the fields. We spoke with the farmers and specifically asked how far we could walk in. They just want to ensure that people are not trampling their precious and beautiful livelihood. Ask them questions- they are happy to tell you more about their tulips.

The next day, we got up bright and early to be some of the first visitors of Keukenhof and again, beat the crowds.

We went to the fields the Thursday before Easter- one of the busiest times of the year. However, we dodged the crowds and this ultimate guide to the tulips Holland will give you some very useful tips.

Free Tulip Fields in The Netherlands

You can frolick to your heart's content through the free tulip fields all around The Netherlands. To me, this is the best way to get up close and personal with the fields and really see how the tulips bloom.

Where Are the Tulip Fields In The Netherlands

When you make your way around The Netherlands, you're likely to see the tulip fields along your route everywhere. However, there are a few specific locations that boast dozens of fields, concentrated in one area. If you head here, you are guaranteed to see tulips during the season.

If you’re looking to find tulip fields in the Netherlands, the best option is to visit the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse. This is one of the largest flower gardens in the world, covering an area of 32 hectares, and it is home to an impressive variety of tulips. The gardens are only open for a few weeks each year – usually from late March until mid-May – so it is important to plan ahead if you want to visit. Other places you can find tulips in the Netherlands include Noordoostpolder and Flevoland, as well as the bulb fields of the North Holland province.

You’ll see fields scattered throughout all of Holland, but particularly in Bollenstreek, which is known as the “Bulb Region” with tulip farms in many of the cities and also near Keukenhof. Noordoorstpolder is a lovely area dotted with many tulips in the northern part of The Netherlands.

The main fields of tulips are located in Noord-Holland (North Holland, Flevoland), Zuid-Holland (South Holland), and Bollenstreek near Keukenhof. Keukenhof is about 30 minutes from Amsterdam.

Some cities with tulip fields in or nearby are Lisse, Noordwijk, Noordwijkerhour, Leiden, The Hague, Haarlem, and Katwijk.

How To Get To The Tulips

A great way to see the fields is to drive. You do need to be a cautious driver. There are lots of bikes and pedestrians and traffic can be quite crazy. You'll be able to see tons of fields and get away from the crowds. Biking is also a wonderful option — and one of the most authentically Dutch ways to experience the tulips! You can rent bikes directly at Keukenhof, making it easy to cycle through the surrounding fields after your visit. Many people find this is their favorite part of the whole trip. You can also take a bus from Amsterdam Airport directly to Keukenhof.

Best time to see the tulips

The tulip season goes from mid March to the end of May. Typically, and this changes depending on the season, the best time of the year to go is mid April.

This is when we went and it seemed like the tulips are in full bloom without losing their luster or petals. When planning your journey I suggest going early or later in the day, towards sunset. The enchanting colors of the petals seem to come to life as the sun sets. Of course, you can go any time throughout the day and still avoid the crowds. If you see a field, keep looking, there are more likely more nearby if you'd like a field all to yourself.

The fields present a patchwork quilt of stunning colors that blanket the fields. It's an amazing sight to see and something everyone should add to their bucket list! Spring is a beautiful time to visit Europe in general, wisteria is rampant, daffodils are popping up, and a variety of flowers will intoxicate your senses.

There is also a festival of tulips that takes place in mid April called the Bulb flower parade. You can also attend the flower market called Aalsmeer which is the largest in the world!

When is the Best Time to See Tulips in The Netherlands?

The tulip season runs from mid-March to mid-May, but the best time to visit is typically mid-April, when tulip fields reach their peak bloom.

Why tulips in the Netherlands?

Because this area of The Netherlands is 4 meters below sea level, it's well suited for the cultivation of the tulips. Some of the land, such as in Flevoland, is reclaimed land, so it actually used to be part of the sea. These are prime conditions to grow tulips as far as the eye can see.

Guide to Keukenhof

Each year, millions of tourists flock to Keukenhof to see the magnificent display of tulips of every color imaginable. 7 million bulbs make Keukenhof one of the most famous places to see tulips. Nicknamed the “Garden of Europe” it's no surprise that visitors are intoxicated by the beauty of the this beautiful, meticulously created landscape of tulips in every shape and size.

The best way to experience Keukenhof is to get there early, and if at all possible, avoid the weekends. This is when it's exceptionally busy. We happened to go on the Thursday before Easter, so it was packed. But getting there at opening time meant there were little crowds and traffic. Also, parking was easy.

You'll see the most variety of tulips here – flamingo pinks, deep purples, feathered edges, tulips the size of both your hands, and many more.

Allow for at least a few hours to enjoy Keukenhof. There are plenty of things to do. You can grab a bite to eat, explore the various tulips, and relax indoors at the market hall. You can even purchase tulips.

Opening – Keukenhof is only open in the spring from March through May. I HIGHLY suggest that you buy tickets ahead of time to skip the line and the crowds.

Cost – Prices for Keukenhof start at €17 for adults, €8.50 for kids, and if you're in a large group they are €14.75 each.

Parking – You can park on site and I suggest that you buy parking ahead of time. Parking is €6 and again, I suggest that you purchase this ahead of time.

Paris is one of the greatest cities in the world. But what should you see and do? It's so big and there's so much, how can you choose? This guide will cover all the essentials for what to do in Paris.

I'll never forget my first time in Paris. It was mid-July and I was 25. I wasn't as worried about skin cancer but I was concerned about lightening my hair and darkening my skin in the sun. I can't tell you if Paris was hot or cold. I can't tell you if it rained. All I know is that I loved it. I glided through the streets as if on pink roller skates, marveling at the beautiful buildings. People told me that Paris was dirty. Where? People told me that the French can be unfriendly. Who? But no one warned me that I would want to move abroad after visiting for just 5 days. That's why I've put together the essential Paris travel guide. Because there are some things you MUST do when you go.

Below you can find a map of all the places discussed in this post. I've created a separate map toward the end of the post of all my favorite restaurants.

Paris is a feeling. I get chills thinking about it. You can't NOT be romantic about Paris. I know, because I dragged Michael (and my Mom) there for my birthday in January. It was freezing, I was wearing a mini dress, it started to rain… I didn't care. Paris just sweeps me up in it's magical entanglements. I think it fits the bill for almost any kind of traveler (and yes, there are different kinds). Whether you want to relax, explore, learn, feast… it's all there, waiting for you.

This is the essential Paris travel guide, but I thought it would be best to break it down into 5 days so you can get the most out of it and see what a typical itinerary might look like.

The Essential Paris Travel Guide

How to Get There

You can land at Charles de Gaulle airport and easily take public transportation. Or, if you are closer, you can take the train. There are many high-speed trains that route into Paris. Typically they come into Gare de l'Est, Gare du Nord, or Gare de Lyon.

Getting Around Paris

I highly recommend taking the Paris metro. This is easier (and less expensive and traffic-y) than a cab. The city is LARGE so walking, while okay in some parts, is just not as feasible if you want to see it all. There are 16 lines and it's easy once you get the hang of it, promise. There is a Metro and bus and your ticket will be good for both. I recommend buying a pass for the number of days you'll be there.

When to Go

I really think you can go anytime. However, winter is LOVELY because you really will avoid the crowds (See also how to avoid lines and people while traveling.) I remember waiting half an hour to go inside the Notre Dame in July, while in January there was no wait. But I will say, going in the spring and summer is lovely because flowers are blooming. Places like Monet's Gardens and Versailles are going to be lush with flowers everywhere.

How Much Money You'll Need

This is going to, of course, vary by where you eat and where you stay. But let me tell you, my first trip to Paris was with the dynamic cheap duo: my husband and his best friend. If you think you are thrifty, you haven't met Michael and Josh. We ate a lot of meals from the grocery store. We had onion soup and conspicuously drank water from our camel-back that we filled up in the bathroom. We splurged one night for a fancy dinner. But oddly enough, my favorite meal was our baguette, wine, and cheese from the grocery store as we sat outside the Eiffel Tower and watched it light up. *Insert heart eye emojis* Honestly you can do it cheaply. Your cost will come in for museums and attractions, and of course, what you eat.

Where to Stay

The Best of the Best:

The Peninsula Hotel has a FANTASTIC and beautiful inside and out. I spent the day there on my last trip, full review at the link!

Hotel Icone is exquisite and has a wonderful attention to detail. This is where I stayed on my trip in the spring and it is one of the best locations. I walked everywhere. It's so close the the Opera, walking distance to the Louvre, Notre Dame, and so much more. Highly recommend.

Mid Range

When my Mom came to visit, we stayed a little more upscale at the loveliest AirBnb in Île-de-France . It was a duplex with two bedrooms and a full kitchen. I also stayed around here with friends.

Budget

If you're as cheap as chips, hostels are where it's at. I never ever felt unsafe. Look for one that has good reviews and then book it!

What to Do

I'm going to plan these activities by day so I'll lay it out in a route. You wouldn't go from the Eiffel tower straight to the Notre Dame, they are farther apart than you think, so hopefully this will have a flow to it for when you're planning.

Short on time? I do recommend getting the Paris Pass that allow you access to museums, attractions, and more and will help you skip lines! It is a bit pricey, but worth it if your time is very limited.

I have just one rule in Paris, and while traveling in general, embrace it. Be a tourist. Take the pictures. Learn about what you're seeing. I promise, you'll want to cherish these memories forever. And maybe even try roast pigeon. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it!

DAY ONE in Paris:

Let's start with the Eiffel Tower. It's classic Paris and the morning is the best time to go for great views without as much of a crowd. Don't worry, this won't be the only time we go. We also have to go at night to watch it light up! If you want to avoid lines and crowds, the earlier that you can get up, the better.

The Trocadéro is one of the best places for seeing the Iron Lady, or you can get up close and personal with her as well. I also suggest grabbing a bottle of wine or a pastry nearby. There will be people selling them for very reasonable pricing.

You can walk here or take the subway (I recommend public transportation as we'll be walking a lot). Once there, you can pay to go up to the tower for a spectacular view. This isn't my favorite view of Paris, but still, you'll get a good grasp of the city. As for pricing by elevator: 1st and 2nd levels €11; top €17. By stairs: 1st and 2nd levels only, €7. Make sure to reserve ahead of time to avoid lines

We went early in the day and grabbed some great shots of the tower for my 30th birthday… even if it was a total fail.

From here, you can head to Arc De Triomphe. A staggering arc in the center of the street. This is a great view of the Avenue des the Champs-Élysées, one of my favorite streets.

In order to get up to the Arc, take the underground passage so you can explore around it and climb up the 284 steps to the top. I think this is one of the best views in Paris.

If you're hungry, the Champs-Élysées, is a great place to find a bite to eat. Just strolling this street is an experience in itself.

Next, head over to one of my favorite spots, the Grand Palais. To me, this is quintessential Paris. One of the loveliest buildings in the world! Just on the other side, is the Petit Palais. I feel like these two buildings aren't mentioned enough. They are exquisite and a testament to French architecture. Sometimes the line can be quite long, but they are lovely inside. The Grand Palais is a museum and exhibition hall, often with events taking place. The Petit Palais is an art museum, worth the look inside, as the whole building is art in itself.

From here, head over to the river Seine for a view of my favorite bridge in the world, the Pont Alexandre III. This is still one of the best spots to people watch in Paris. You might remember it from the Movie “Midnight in Paris.” In case you're looking, here are some of the best movies to watch about Europe, France, and Paris.

There are three museums near here that I think are worth the visit: Musée d'Orsay, Musée de l'Orangerie, and Musée de Rodin. I think out of the three, go to the Orsay. It's an old train station and holds some of the world's greatest art. The art here is focused on the period of 1848-1940, while the Lourve focuses on art before that period.

Prepare to spend at least a couple hours in the museum. We did a guided tour for just 5 EUR per person additional, and I highly recommend it! You'll find Impressionist art from Renoir, Degas, and Monet.

If you don't have time to go to all the museums, I suggest going by Les Invalides. This is a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement and it's a beautiful museum. The Musée de l'Armée Invalides has a wonderful history on war and a great collection of military pieces. You'll also find Napoleon's Tomb in all it's glory.

You can grab a hot chocolate at Angelina's then go to Place de la Concorde, the largest square in Paris, for a view of the ferris wheel, Fontaine des Mers and Fontaine des Fleuves. Even at night this will all be lit up!

Just a short walk from Les Invalides is the Rodin Museum, one of the most beautiful and peaceful museums in Paris. The museum is housed in an elegant mansion surrounded by sculpture gardens filled with Rodin's most famous works, including The Thinker and The Gates of Hell.

Unlike larger museums like the Louvre, the Rodin Museum is quiet and intimate, making it a wonderful place to slow down and enjoy art in a serene setting. If the weather is nice, spend time wandering through the gardens where sculptures are displayed among roses and fountains.

If you're looking for a less crowded museum in Paris, this is one of the best.

DAY 2 in PARIS:

Today we'll start at the Notre Dame. One of the most iconic churches in the world, the twin steeples tower above all the grand buildings nearby.

Don't forget to explore around here. There are plenty of great coffee shops and restaurants and lovely trees. Also, if there is a line, wait! It moves quick. Don't go to Paris and NOT go into the Notre Dame. When I got here at 8am there was no line at all.

A great spot to take in the scenery is Au Vieux Paris. One of the cutest spots, especially in the spring, with wisteria all around.

It's time to Church hop. Next on the list is my all time favorite, Sainte-Chapelle. Don't be fooled by the seemingly uninspiring exterior (in Paris at least). The inside is one of the most awe-inspiring stained glass masterpieces of all time.

I love this area of Paris because it's the island. So it feels a bit separated from everything else and you are surrounded by water. The Ile de la Cité as it's named, feels separate from everything else.

Next, we'll cross the bridge, Pont Saint-Michel to head down for some more sites of Paris.

Walk south and past the Sorbonne to the Latin Quarter. The Latin Quarter of Paris and it's known for student life and architecture. Lots of pretty cafe-lined streets and a great place to just wander around.

Keep walking and you'll find the Panthéon, a building originally intended as a church to hold St. Genevieve's relics, now a state burial site for France's heroes like Victor Hugo, Voltaire, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. I have yet to go inside, but if you're short on time, I'd just look at the building on the outside.

From here, it's a quick walk over to the Luxemborg Garden. Lots of green space, this is the perfect place to relax after all that walking. This arrondissement (area) of Paris is Saint-Germain-des-Prés and is such a peaceful spot.

When facing the fountain you can get a great view of the residence of Marie de' Medici, the widow of King Henry IV.

Next, loop back up north and stop in at Église Saint-Sulpice. A lovely church along rue Bonaparte. This is the second largest in Paris (after the Notre Dame) and you might recognize it from the “The Da Vinci Code.”

Tired of walking? Take a break at Pont Des Arts (another pretty bridge) and grab a view of the Seine and the buildings around you.

Next up is one of the best museums in the world: the Louvre. Please, pretty please, buy tickets ahead of time. Be prepared to wait in line if you don't! Don't forget that close to opening or closing is the best time to get in and avoid crowds. Don't forget that the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays.

DAY 3 in PARIS:

Monmarte is one of the most interesting parts of Paris. I highly recommend doing a free walking tour (we did the Discovery Walks Tour).  It's a fun and interactive tour and you just need to tip at the end. This is one of the best ways to truly get a feeling for a place, and learn some gems about the city and it's people.

Monmarte is full of charm and really sets itself apart from main-street Paris. In the late 1800s and early 1900s artists flocked here as it was cheaper to live and work. The walking tour will take a couple of hours and you'll see a different side of Paris.

On our tour, we started with the Moulin Rouge, then headed up to Le Mur Des Je t'aime where you'll see “I love you” written out in 300 languages. You can also pass by famous cafes, like the one from the movie “Amélie”.

Meander over to the beautiful restaurant Le Moulin de la galette, also the spot where Renoir painted one of his most famous paintings.

Walk up past the infamous pink building, La Maison Rose.

Then head up to the gem of Monmarte, the Sacre Couer. In reality, most Parisians are not a fan because it was built with their own money after the war by the French National Government as a reminder to the people.

Step inside the church for more lovely architecture and paintings.

Don't forget to take in the view. You can really see how dense Paris is from here.  The white domes of the basilica are the highest point in the city, so climb up to the top for a spectacular view.

Find your way back down on Rue de Martyrs and pick a spot for lunch. This is a great area for funky shops and coffee.

Keep going down and head to The Galeries Lafayette for some of the most renowned shopping in the world. This is all high end shopping (not in my budget) but it's worth it to head to the terrace for a great view. There are lots of cool shops for every kind of buyer- from clothing, shoes, accessories, foodies, and more. It particularly pretty at night as it's all lit up.

If you're still ready for more, head to Père Lachaise Cemetery. You might find it odd to go to a cemetery but it has many famous graves and is the largest in Paris.

A good place to get away from the busy streets and see some fascinating memorials. Some famous tombs are Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, and Oscar Wilde. The tradition is to kiss the now glass encased tomb.

DAY 4 in Versailles:

I know that there is so much to see and do in Paris but you MUST take a day to half-day trip to Versailles. Truly, one of the most opulent and incredible places in the world. It even landed on the 25 best castles in the world list.

Go as early as you can to beat the crowds. PRO TIP: The main palace is closed on Mondays! And can be super crowded on the weekends.

I absolutely adore Versailles and believe it can take up almost your whole day, so plan accordingly. You'll see the palace, the gardens, and Marie Antoinette's Estate. All are a bit of a walk and I suggest packing a lunch!

Gaze up at the overwhelmingly stunning Hall of Mirrors. I can remember my first time seeing this and I couldn't contain my excitement. You dream of palaces and can't truly imagine what they are like until you're inside. This one is straight out of a story book.

Not only is it architecturally beautiful, there are rooms that are still furnished in every color imaginable and art that stands the test of time.

The gardens are trimmed and cropped to perfection, with fountains that light up at night. So if you're interested in staying the entire day, it will make sense. Don't forget to head to Marie Antoinette's pink marble abode.

After spending the day in arguably one of the most beautiful palaces in the world, head to something dramatically different: the Catacombs. These underground tombs hold the remains of more than 6 million people! This is back in Paris, so if you didn't spend the whole day in Versailles, this is a good option.

DAY 5 in PARIS:

Start bright and early with the  Tuileries Garden and eat at a food stand. You can also pick up a bushel of fresh flowers from a shop nearby.

From here, walk down to the Rue de Rivioli for some of the best shopping you can find. This grand street is flanked with shops, restaurants and cafes.

Next up, venture to one of my favorite sites in Paris, the Opera Garnier. This building is just magnificent, both inside and out. There is a pricey ticket for touring the inside, but it's so opulent it's worth a visit.

Of course, one of my favorite things to do is just to walk around and see the city. It's so romantic and tells a story with each step.

Cap off your 5 days with seeing the Eiffel Tower light up at night. There is absolutely nothing in the world like it. This is where I fell deeply in love with Europe.

Still have some extra time? Go to Monet's Gardens. This is a half day trip and only 45 minutes from Paris. Check out a museums: Orsay, Lourve, Organerie, Picasso, and many more!

It's necessary to grab a Café au Lait and a croissant and just walk around the city, taking in the sights. Paris is just so fun to walk around and get lost.

One of my favorite quotes from a Parisian I recently met was, “you really can't go wrong in Paris.” Meaning, all the food and drinks are going to be good. It's a country that is known for it's cuisine, so you can't go wrong! But here are some of my top picks:

Le Train Bleu- One of the prettiest restaurants in the world and it's located in a train station!

Maison Bergeron – a great bakery near the Eiffel tower! They have my favorite pastry: kouigyn amman.

Angelina's – Known for delicious hot chocolate. I was told it's made with three different chocolate from Africa. If there's a super long line just get it to go.

Ladurée – I have to say.. I'm not a big fan of macarons but this is the place to go if you want some of the best.

Cafe Kitsuné – Arguably one of the most instagrammable cafes in Paris. The coffee is tasty and pretty.

Comptoir de La Gastronomie – one of the best meals I've ever had. The Foie Gras Ravioli was out of this world.

La Stube – This is the perfect lunch spot for a savory tart or Salmon Strudel. Also try their cakes, divine!

Le Grenier à Pain – for great baked goods. They won best bread in Paris. Try a “tradi” for a traditional baguette.

Grand Amour Hotel – Brunch with the best in this classic hotel filled with delicious food and even more beautiful scenery.

Aux Lyonnais – This is traditional food that comes from Lyon and it's delicious. A great big bowl of hot food.

Cafe Callou – I LOVED this! Great classic French cuisine and great people watching – just like a Parisienne!

Le Consulat – a perfect little cafe to people watch and have onion soup.

Le Refuge des Fondus– Wine out of baby bottles. Need I say more? It's hilarious and they also have great fondue.

Café de Flore – on a terrace in St Germain this is a great place for brunch, breakfast, or lunch.

The Best Way to See Paris and France: A River Cruise

Paris is incredible on its own, but one of the best ways to experience Paris and more of France is by taking a river cruise.

Instead of unpacking and repacking your suitcase while traveling between cities, a river cruise allows you to wake up somewhere new each morning while your floating hotel moves you effortlessly through the countryside. It’s a relaxed way to see multiple destinations without the stress of trains, airports, or constantly changing hotels.

On a Seine River cruise, you can begin in Paris and sail through Normandy, stopping in historic towns, visiting places like Rouen, Honfleur, and the D-Day landing beaches. It’s one of the most beautiful routes in France and a wonderful way to see both the capital and the countryside.

If you want to explore southern France, a Rhône River cruise takes you through Provence and Burgundy, with stops in places like Avignon, Arles, and Lyon. Think vineyards, medieval villages, lavender fields, and incredible food and wine.

What I personally love about river cruising is how immersive it feels. You’re not just visiting a place for a few hours — you’re slowly traveling through the heart of a region and experiencing the landscapes along the way.

On my recent trip to Paris I knew I had to seek out some of the iconic scenes and shooting locations from Midnight in Paris as well as some of my favorite quotes from the movie.

There are a lot of great quotes about Paris. It's a city that inspires romanticism, drama, and art. But Midnight in Paris has some of my favorite quotes about the city. I'm sharing those right along with the film locations so you can step back in time and enjoy the epic scenery that draws you into the city.

The movie is about Gil, a writer who's obsessed with the past and dreams about Paris' golden age in the 1920s. He's visiting Paris with his bratty fiance and her snobby parents. Gil and Ines (his fiance) shop for over-priced antique chairs, drink fancy wine at swanky rooftop bars, and run in to a couple who they travel and spend time with around Paris.

After all, who wouldn't want to time travel back o the 1920s to sip brandy with the Fitzgeralds, fight with Hemingway, see Picasso's newest work, or get surreal with Dalí? The best part? This movie is mostly historically accurate and these iconic writers and artists lived in Paris at the time.

Walking the streets of Paris at Midnight, the strangest thing happens to our protagonist, Gil: an old Peugeot car rolls down the street and Gil enters the past, quite literally. He's transported to the 1920s where he falls in love even more with the city and starts to realize his true dreams.

“Can you picture how drop-dead gorgeous this city is in the rain? Imaging this town in the '20s. Paris in the '20s in the rain; the artists and writers.”

“There's no city like this in the world. There never was!” Gil and Inez are in Monet’s Garden in the opening scene, standing on the bridge and admiring where Monet got inspiration for much of his work. Monet’s gardens are an easy day trip from Paris at only about a an hour train or car ride away. Claude Monet's Water Garden, Giverny, Eure, France. It's located across the road from Monet's house at 84 Rue Claude Monet.

They stay at Hotel Bristol and many scenes from the movie are shot in the dining room, rooms, and outside. It has a fanciful facade and exudes Parisian charm. You can find it here: Hotel Le Bristol, 112 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Paris, France.

“I’m not a big Francophile,” says Inez’s Dad. Le Grand Véfour is where Inez, Gil, and her parents have lunch. The restaurants is absolutely stunning and is worth a walk around. Find it at 17 Rue du Beaujolais.

“You know, nostalgia is denial. Denial of the painful present.” – Paul talking about how silly Gil's book sounds. Versailles is another must for a day-trip outside of Paris. The historic palace was also the scene for Gil, Inez, and their couple friends to stroll the gardens and argue about Gil’s book. The Palace of Versailles is located in Place d'Armes, 78000 Versailles, France.

“Ah sex and alcohol, it fuels the desire but kills the performance” – Paul, as they drink wine on the rooftop bar overlooking the city with the glittering Eiffel Tower in the background. You can find the bar at Hotel Le Meurice, called La Belle Étoile, located at 228 Rue de Rivoli, Paris, France. This is also a lovely street for shopping and strolling.

I also recommend The Peninsula Paris for great rooftop views of the Eiffel Tower. Find it at 19 Avenue Kléber, 75116 Paris, France.

“I’m really finding these midnight walks good for my creativity!” Gil explains to Inez why he keeps traipsing around at night. I agree, the best way to experience Paris is to take a stroll around. At night, the Eiffel Tower sparkles, the buildings are lit up, and the city seems to come to life. Gil gets lost and as the clock strikes midnight he finds a car from the 1920s that he hops inside. This spot can be found at Rue Mouffetard at Rue Édouard Quenu, Paris, France.

The steps themselves are located just around from the Panthéon at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont Church, Place de L’Abbé Basset, Paris, France.

“I believe that love is real and true and creates a respite from death.” – Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway’s character in the movie is spot on. Gil meets Hemingway at The Polidor. This remains a very popular restaurant in Paris’s Left Bank. The restaurant looks very similar to how it looked in the 1920s and was visited by many famous people in the 20s. You can find The Polidor at 41 Rue Monsieur le Prince, Paris, France.

“Cheap is cheap.” Inez’s mother tells Gil after he’s shocked to hear about the *18,000 price tag of some antique chairs. You can find the shop at 112 Boulevard de Courcelles, Paris, France.

“I love it. I'm hooked.” This is Adriana's response after hearing the opening of Gil's book.

“The pedantic one.” Paul, the friend of Inez, ends up arguing with the tour guide while they visit Rodin’s museum, an easy walk in Paris to explore more of the artist, Rodin Museum, 79 Rue de Varenne, Paris, France.

The museum has beautiful grounds and is a great place to stroll. And find inspiration from the film.

“I’d like to think I'm a member of Linda and Cole's inner circle.” Gil says this to a young woman, Gabrielle, working in a flea market selling old vinyl records and memorabilia. This happens to be the largest antique market in the world! You can find the flea market, Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, at Le Marché Paul Bert, 96-110 Rue des Rosiers, Saint-Ouen, France.

“He's distracted by the fact she was just an absolute volcano in the sack.” Gil argues with Paul about Picasso paintings at the beautiful Musée de l'Orangerie, Jardin des Tuileries, Paris, France.

After dancing at an outdoor fete, Adriana and Gil decide to stroll the city at night. “I can never decide whether Paris is more beautiful by day or by night.” – Adriana

“No, you can't, you couldn't pick one. I mean I can give you a checkmate argument for each side. You know, I sometimes think, how is anyone ever gonna come up with a book, or a painting, or a symphony, or a sculpture that can compete with a great city. You can't. Because you look around and every street, every boulevard, is its own special art form and when you think that in the cold, violent, meaningless universe that Paris exists, these lights, I mean come on, there's nothing happening on Jupiter or Neptune, but from way out in space you can see these lights, the cafés, people drinking and singing. For all we know, Paris is the hottest spot in the universe.” – Gil

Here, they are walking in Île de la Cite near Restaurant Paul, specifically 17 Place Dauphine, Paris, France. Next, the backdrop of Monmarte surrounds them. Monmarte was a hangout for many artists in Paris in the 1920s. They also are seen walking down the steps at Rue du Chevalier-de-La-Barre, Paris, France. Here you can see the Sacre Couer.

Gertrude Stein was an American living in Paris and edited Hemingway and others work. Stein edits Gil’s book and remarks, “The artist's job is not to succumb to despair but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence.” Gil picks up a book along the Seine river where today many stalls sell old books, art, and collectibles. Find this street at Quai de Montebello.

“Too rich for me.” Inez's dad says while eating the food at a hotel. Next, he's seen at Duluc detective agency, one that is still there to this day.

“Gil, your tumor is acting up again!” – Inez says when Gil accuses Inez of cheating on him with Paul.

“You’ve got a glazed look in your eyes. Stunned. Stupefied. Anesthetized. Lobotomized.” – Zelda Fitzgerald when talking to Gil as he realizes he’s time traveled to the 1920s in Paris. Zelda is later seen distraught, attempting to jump into the Seine river. Behind her is the bridge Pont Neuf. The address is Pont Neuf, Quai des Orfèvres, Paris, France.

Gil and Adriana hop on a horse and carriage and head to the turn of the century in Paris. They go to Maxim’s, a restaurant still here to this day. You can find it here: Maxim’s, 3 Rue Royale, Paris, France

“You always take the side of the help! That's why Daddy says you're a communist” – Inez. Gil is seen perusing the famous Shakespeare and Company book shop located at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie, Paris, France. This is very near the Notre Dame and also now has a fun coffee shop.

“That's what the present is, it's a little unsatisfying, because life's a little unsatisfying.” – Gil. There are many coffee shops and corners in Paris that are reminiscent of the movie. In fact, Le Precope, opened in 1686, is the world’s first coffeehouse. For centuries, it’s welcomed writers and artists and made St-Germain-des-Prés a regular place for artists. Le Nemours is near the Lourve and is one of the oldest in the area as well.

“Actually, I think Paris is the most beautiful in the rain.” The last scene is one of my favorites, taken in one of my favorite places. The best way to experience the city and get the true feelings from the movie is just to walk around- rain or shine, night or day.

Like every good novel, this movie showcases epic scenery, tells a beautiful story, and leaves you with a feeling of happiness. It's one I watch again and again, kind of like coming to Paris- I can never get sick of it.

Could I really walk 100 miles across England’s countryside? Was I ready for the hills, the rain, the blisters?

I was nervous. But as I tightened the straps on my backpack and took those first steps past the old market hall, something shifted. I wasn’t just starting a walk; I was stepping into a story—a winding path through history, nature, and, truthfully, myself.

Over the next ten days, I wandered through ancient woodlands, climbed up to sweeping escarpments with views that made me stop in my tracks, and ended each day in villages so charming it almost felt like I had wandered onto a movie set. There were tough climbs and muddy boots, yes, but also those quiet, golden moments that stitched themselves into my memory: a deer darting through a misty field, the clink of a pub doorbell as I stumbled in for a much-needed pint, a local pointing me down an overgrown path with a smile and a “You'll love this bit.”

Walking the Cotswold Way was so much more than just a hike. It was a journey—and one I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.

What is the Cotswold Way?

The Cotswold Way is a National Trail in southwest England that runs about 102 miles (164 km) from Chipping Campden to Bath.

The Cotswold Way is one of the official National Trails in the UK—a collection of long-distance paths specially designated for their natural beauty, cultural importance, and historical significance.

It travels through the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, famous for its rolling hills, ancient stone villages, sheep-dotted fields, and storybook scenery. Along the way, you’ll pass castles, battlefields, Neolithic burial grounds, and landscapes that look almost too beautiful to be real.

The Cotswold Way isn’t about speed; it’s about soaking it all in, one footstep at a time.

It feels like walking through a story book!

My Personal Journey Walking England's Cotswold Way

In May 2024 I decided to walk the Cotswold Way.

Not to be dramatic here but it changed my life.

I was living in Oxford, England and was feeling stressed and overweight. I told my husband and he made me a detailed 4 month training plan. I started training and eating healthy. I fell in LOVE with walking. I lost 30 pounds before the hike and discovered a deep love of the countryside and walking.

Here's the exact training program I followed.

This training isn't easy, it's demanding. But it made the walk itself so so so wonderful. I actually ended up walking 131 miles because I did all the extra side trips because I felt SO good.

How Long Does it Take to Walk the Cotswold Way?

Most people take between 7 and 10 days to complete the trail, though ultra-marathon types might tackle it faster.

👉 If you want to enjoy the journey—stopping for cream teas, castle visits, and long pub lunches—I highly recommend giving yourself around 10 days.

How long it takes to walk the Cotswold Way really depends on two things: how much you want to walk each day, and how much you want to explore beyond the trail itself.

Most people complete the Cotswold Way in 7 to 10 days.

• If you're aiming for a faster pace and don't mind long walking days, you can finish in 7 or 8 days (averaging 13–16 miles per day).
• If, like me, you want time to soak it all in—to wander through villages, visit castles, stop for leisurely lunches, and maybe sit on the occasional bench just to enjoy the view—you'll want closer to 10 days.

I chose the slower, savor-everything route and walked the Cotswold Way over 10 days. And while the official trail itself is 102 miles, by the end of my journey, my GPS tracker showed that I had walked 131 miles total!

Why the extra miles?
Well, one of the best parts of walking the Cotswold Way is that you're never far from something worth detouring for. I ended up taking side trips to explore castles, historic sites, hilltop monuments, and of course, charming villages slightly off the main trail. I couldn’t resist visiting places like Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe and Horton Court, a beautiful medieval manor house—and every extra step was absolutely worth it.

A few things that added miles for me:

• Wandering through towns like Painswick, Winchcombe, and Wotton-under-Edge
• Taking scenic detours to castles and monuments
• Walking to and from accommodations when they were a little off the official route
• Exploring viewpoints and country pubs (priorities!)

So while the official distance is just over 100 miles, it's good to plan for a little extra, especially if you’re anything like me and can’t resist a good side quest.

My advice:

• Give yourself a bit of breathing room with your itinerary.
• Build in time for side adventures—you’ll want it!
• Remember, it's not just about reaching Bath at the end; it's about everything you experience along the way.

And honestly? Those extra miles ended up being some of the most magical parts of my trip.

Trust me: your feet (and your soul) will thank you.

How Difficult is the Cotswold Way?

The Cotswold Way is rated moderate. It’s not a technical trail—no scrambling or mountaineering required—but it’s hillier than you might expect.

Each day brings a mix of steep climbs, gentle fields, wooded paths, and the occasional rocky patch after rain. Some of those hills are no joke, but the good news? Every climb comes with a view worth the effort.

Quick facts:

• Terrain: rolling hills, farm tracks, woodland, country roads
• Elevation: over 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) of total ascent
• Navigation: well-marked with the acorn symbol, but having a map or hiking app is smart (I used AllTrails app!)

Personally I had no issues. No blisters. No problems. I felt great everyday. And I know that is because I trained. And the training was fun! I also had these hiking boots which I highly recommend.

Best Time to Walk the Cotswold Way

While you can walk the trail year-round, spring and autumn are pure magic.

• Spring (April–June): Fresh blooms, newborn lambs, longer days.
• Summer (July–August): Warm, lush, but busier with tourists.
• Autumn (September–October): Fiery foliage, crisp air, cozy pub evenings.
• Winter (November–March): Quiet but muddy, with short daylight hours.

I walked in early October, and it felt like the landscape had turned into a painting—golden fields, rusty red trees, and soft mist hanging over the hills each morning.

What to Pack for Walking the Cotswold Way

Packing wisely makes a huge difference. You don’t need a giant pack weighing you down, but you do need a few essentials:

• Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots (well broken-in, I packed 2 pairs)
• Socks (and an extra pair on the trail)
• Lightweight daypack
• Waterproof jacket and pants (essential in England!)
• Hiking Poles (essential for me!)
• Layers for warmth (merino wool is your friend)
• Leggings
• Camelbak for water
• Snacks (energy bars, trail mix, etc.)
• Navigation (OS Maps app, AllTrails, or a paper map)
• Cash and credit card (some rural pubs don’t take cards)
• Portable Charger
• Sunscreen

There’s something so rewarding about finishing a long walking day and checking into a cozy inn or B&B.

• Country inns with roaring fireplaces

• Boutique hotels in historic towns
• Farm stays with fields stretching out for miles

My Top Tips for Walking the Cotswold Way

• Start slow: Especially on the first couple of days—your body needs to adjust.
• Use a luggage transfer: It’s worth every penny.
• Don't overpack: You'll regret it by mile 50.
• Plan snack stops: Some sections have long gaps without shops or cafes.
• Enjoy the small moments: A friendly wave from a farmer, a field glowing in the late afternoon sun—these were my favorite memories.
• TRAIN. Train ahead of time. I've seen too many videos and stories of people not having a good time because they just did it without training.

Planning to walk the Cotswold Way in 2026? Here are a few updates to keep in mind:

🗓️ Events: The Cotswold Way Relay continues annually and may impact certain trail sections in June. A fun event

🛤️ Route Diversions: A few temporary and permanent trail diversions remain in place near areas like North Nibley, Tormarton, and Farfield Dursley. Always check the National Trails website before you walk for the most up-to-date route info.

🥾 Trail Surface Improvements: Several sections have been resurfaced to improve drainage, especially in previously muddy areas like Haresfield Beacon and Standish Woods.

📱 Navigation: While the trail is well-marked, summer overgrowth can hide signs—download a GPX file or use an app like OS Maps or AllTrails as a backup.

🛏️ Accommodation: With the Cotswold Way growing in popularity, many inns and B&Bs are booking up early for 2026—especially in towns like Winchcombe and Painswick. Book 3–6 months ahead when possible. to witness—or avoid if you prefer a quieter walk!

Whether you're after the Christmas spirit, a charming, snowy landscape, or a frolic through a castle, this guide to the best places in Europe for the colder months has it all. From the best places to go for Christmas or if you're wanting an escape this is the best of Europe.

1. Zermatt, Switzerland

The falling snow was mesmerizing as I sat by the window, overlooking the quiet town below. Not a car in sight or a soul walking around – only skiers gliding down well worn paths. I was in Zermatt, Switzerland and the ever looming Matterhorn had yet to be seen. After days of not seeing this incredible mountain, the clouds finally parted, the snow lifted, and she stood proudly.

This beautiful and romantic city is one of the prettiest in Europe. It offers plenty of winter activities and is the perfect place to relax. I had one of my all time favorite stays in this charming place and I will remember it for years to come.

2. Strasbourg, France

There is no city in the world that transforms into a Christmas wonderland quite like Strasbourg. Every single window and lane is decorated from nearly top to bottom with lights and even stuffed animals.  It's a gingerbread town come to life with the half-timbered houses and the lively Christmas markets, shopping, and the traditions of German Christmas markets spilling over from the nearby country. Since you're in the area I suggest taking a short trip over to Baden Baden, Heidelberg, or The Black Forest in Germany for the traditional markets.

3. The Austrian Alps

In the summer months you'll find miles of green and the sound of bells on cows as they roam the wide open hills. But winter frosts the ground and makes everything feel like a wonderland. The rough peaks of the alps are truly an incredible sight and the tall steeples from the churches in the towns below make you feel like you're stepping back in time.

My favorite towns in the alps are in the Wilder Kaiser area. I absolutely love the towns of Zöll, Ellmau, Going, and Kitzbuehel.

4. Lake Como, Italy

If you're wanting a warmer spot and lower prices for your European travels in winter then Italy is a great choice. The famous lake is perfect for wine lovers and those that want to get away from the crowds. Take a boat ride out on the water or visit nearby towns like Bellagio and Varenna. There's also an incredible light show that occurs from mid December to January 6.

5. Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Germany

Rothenburg is a fully walled in city dating back to the 12th century. If you're wanting the true romantic experience of traditional Christmas markets in Germany than look no further. Colorful buildings topped with snow are a real life fairy-tale setting. Here you'll find the German Christmas market museum so you can learn all about the traditions of this world famous tradition. 6. Translyvania, Romania

The home of Dracula is the perfect place for winter or Halloween vibes. You'll find surprisingly picturesque countrysides and incredible true stories of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula. Be on the look out for hidden gems in these pretty cities such as catching a traditional Romanian wedding. There are castles galore as well as some of the best food I've had. Plus it's very inexpensive, the people are wonderful, and the history interesting.

I recommend visiting Sibiu, Sighişoara, and Braşov for true Romanian traditions and a beautiful surroundings. This underrated country is full of winding streets, stunning architecture, and delightful natural beauty making it worth the visit.

7. Iceland

The shoulder season in Iceland is amazing. A bit chillier, but so much more room to roam. Your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are much better in the winter (and fall). You'll fly into Reyjavik but PLEASE, please make sure you get out of town and explore the diverse landscape Iceland has to offer. The crowd-free waterfalls

I recommend heading there in early winter to be able to enjoy as much of the landscape as possible.

8. Maastricht, The Netherlands

Yes, you can of course visit Amsterdam, but consider heading to the cheery town of Maastricht. As one of the oldest cities in Holland you'll find a vibrant city with medieval architecture and historic cobblestone streets. I recommend taking a walking tour and warming up at a pub or over some divine waffles. “Pinky” is one of the best waffles I've had in my life! Located on the Southern tip of The Netherlands you can easily pop over to Liege, Belgium for some French cuisine.

9. London, England

I know what you're thinking: that it will be freezing and miserable. But London isn't really known for having particularly great weather. And London DECKS out its holidays like none other. Oxford Street is a feast for the eyes. There are string lights on every corner, bows as big as cars on shops, and you can skate in front of one of the prettiest buildings in the world. It's fantastic. There's even a Christmas market happening in Hyde Park.

10. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is a beautiful city no matter the season, but winter brings out some of the best in this city. A light dusting of snow covers the Old Town Square and the traditional Christmas markets make for the perfect backdrop. There are multiple markets throughout the city so you can go hopping from shop to shop for handmade goods and eat hot and delicious trdelinks.

11. Lucerne, Switzerland

I know, I know, another place in Switzerland? Yes. It truly is just that pretty. This impressive but small city is full of intimate cafes with soft lighting and delectable food. The covered bridge is the oldest in the world and stretches over the lake. Flanked by snow-capped mountains, filled with medieval architecture, and a beautiful lake setting, this peaceful town is wonderful when you're all bundled up.

Lucerne lends itself as a great getaway for those that want to relax or explore.

12. Copenhagen, Denmark

The Danish have a whole word and really, lifestyle, for the feeling of coziness: hygge. There's no better place to warm up by the fireside with a nice glass of red and a sheepskin throw as you chat over the weather. You can also get your fill of delicious seafood at Torvehallerne or gaze at the colorful buildings on the docks of Nyhavn. Copenhagen even takes it a step further and offers a winter culture month, Wondercool, which occurs in February and includes concerts in unusual venues, art shows, and culinary events.

13. The Black Forest, Germany

The big cities are full of bright lights and beautiful Christmas decor. But you can't beat the natural and awe-inspiring beauty that is the Black Forest in Germany. It's inspired fairy-tales and stories throughout the centuries. The vastness of the mountains and the dense evergreen trees make for a beautiful scene. There are winter activities such as skiing and hiking or you can go into the nearby town of Sasbachwalden for coffee and cake. From here you can visit nearby Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Baden Baden.

14. Rovaniemi, Finland

It's time to embrace the cold and head far north to the snowy wonderland of Rovaniemi. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than visiting the official home of Santa Claus? Located in the Arctic Circle this is one of the best places to go on a husky ride through a maze of evergreen and white. If you don't mind the cold temperature then this is the best way to spend your winter holiday.

One of the most gorgeous places in all of Europe with the tallest mountain in Europe, too!  Mont Blanc towers over the picturesque town of Chamonix The Alps are stunning, especially covered in snow. But the town of Chamonix is bursting with great french culture and cuisine. This is the perfect place to enjoy winter activities or cozy up by the fire!

Early December tends to hit the sweet spot: crisp weather, twinkling lights, and fewer tourists than right before Christmas.

Book early — especially if you’re visiting iconic markets like Strasbourg, Cologne, or Vienna, where hotels fill up months in advance. Look for accommodations near the old town or main square so you can easily walk to the markets and enjoy the lights after dark.

Now that I've had the pleasure of going to some of the best markets across Europe I'm creating my ultimate guide to the European Christmas Markets! I made it my mission to visit some of the best in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and beyond. I've got you covered for your ultimate guide for the best Christmas markets in Europe.

When it comes to Christmas I always feel like a kid again. But Europe seems to add an extra touch of magic. Walking into the markets is just an overwhelming sense of fun, friends, and happiness. For this itinerary, I'm breaking down the best Christmas markets in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and beyond. I've also got a breakdown of what to buy, eat, and I'm showing you a typical route in order to get the most out of your time!

Ultimate Guide for The Best Christmas Markets in Europe

What to expect

Europe's Christmas markets are steeped in history. The first market was said to be held in Vienna, Austria dating back to 1296, but the first “winter market” was in Munich, Germany in 1310. The first “official” market was Dresden's Strietzelmarkt in 1434. Christmas markets are also known as Christkindlmarkt, Christkindlesmarkt, Christkindlmarket, Christkindlimarkt, and Weihnachtsmarkt and take place during the start of Advent. Each market has it's own traditions, decorations, and food. Germany's markets tend to be more traditional while Austria's tend to be a bit more elaborate. Most markets end just before Christmas, but in towns such as Speyer, Germany they prolong the celebration. You'll see lovely stalls (or chalets) selling handcrafted ornaments and crafts, local food, and hot, mulled wine called glühwein.

Avoid the crowds: Europeans take Christmas markets very seriously. Avoid crowds and lines by going during the day, or opt for going during the week, Mondays or Tuesdays are best.

Good to know

Many of the stalls selling glühwein (and some food) will have something called a “pfand” this is extra money that you'll pay for the cup, usually a few euros. Once done with your drink you can keep the cup (usually they are a great souvenir as they say the location and date) or return it to get your money back.

Bring cash, most sellers will only take cash at a Christmas market. The winter markets can be cold, so make sure to bring something warm and comfortable shoes. You'll most likely be on your feet to peruse the stalls.

Most major European cities have Christmas markets, and they are all lovely. But, I have been to dozens so I'm pulling out the best Christmas markets to get the “real” experience along with an itinerary to help you on your way.

Best Christmas Markets in Germany

The German Christmas markets are the original and the best. Since they date back to the 1300s, many of the German Christmas markets still celebrate traditions from the old days. You'll find richly decorated Christmas stalls and traditional Christmas food like bratwurst and kartoffelpuffer. I suggest starting your journey in Germany. My suggestions for Christmas markets in Germany are: Heidelberg, Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Munich, Nuremberg and Dresden. Most towns in Germany, including the smaller ones, will all offer a Weihnachtsmarkt, so you really can't go wrong!

Nuremberg is steeped in tradition and you'll find a huge market with lots to see, do, and eat. But my favorite is the more laid-back Heidelberg. The markets are throughout the Haupstrasse (the long pedestrian street) and make it easier for crowds to ebb and flow through the street. You'll find ornately decorated stalls, roasting meats, and a car-free street to skip along from market to market. It exudes a small town and inviting feeling.

Munich started one of the first Christmas markets, so it's a shame not to go here. They go out of their way to decorate and even have themed markets, such as their “pink” Christmas market. Bavaria tends to do things just a little bit differently and Munich really takes Christmas up a notch.

Best Christmas Markets in France

Going to France is like stepping into a Currier and Ives print. The perfectly placed real-life gingerbread houses surrounded with Christmas stalls, music, and sweet-smelling pastries are a feast for the senses. The most beautiful Christmas markets are in Strasbourg and Colmar in the Alsace region.

Strasbourg's Christmas markets are sprinkled throughout the city and each one is prettier than the next. The decor is over-the-top but so much fun. The background of the overpowering Notre Dame cathedral makes a grand statement over the square. But the real highlight is the 30 meter tall Christmas tree! They call Strasbourg the Capital of Christmas and it always proves its point as the best place to spend the holidays.

If you think the decorations in Strasbourg were elaborate, wait until you get to Colmar. Every building seems to be adorned with lights, ornaments, and even teddy bears! Everywhere you turn is a half-timbered landscape of uneven, multicolored houses. It truly looks more like a doll's playhouse.

Best Christmas Markets in Switzerland

The perfect place for a winter wonderland is definitely in Switzerland. You'll find ski chalets nestled next to Christmas markets and, of course, the lovely alps. You'll delight in artisan goods and some of my favorite treats. The best markets are in Basel, Bern, Lucerne, and Zurich. After traveling through France it's very easy to get to Switzerland. The distance from Colmar to Basel is about an hour and a half by car.

Basel is a pretty city overlooking the water and multiple Christmas markets throughout the large squares. The decor here is vibrant and lovely and the markets are all within walking distance from one another.

My favorite market in Switzerland is not too far from Basel in Lucerne, Switzerland. Situated on the lake, you'll find extravagant displays and some of the best cheeses in the world. All the shops and stores are decked out for the holidays with blankets and sheepskin stools.

Best Christmas Markets in Austria

Austria has many lovely Christmas markets and small towns. You'll find them in Salzburg, Ellmau, Graz, and Kitzbuhel, but the best is in Vienna. The Vienna Christmas markets are one of the most famous and popular in all of Europe. It's no surprise why: the elegant chandeliers light up the streets and paint a picture of rich opulence. I find the markets in Austria to be lovely, romantic, and a great combination of traditional and modern refinement.

Best Christmas Markets in Vienna

There are multiple markets throughout the city but my favorites are Rathaus, St. Stephen's Square, Maria-Therea Square, Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere, and Altes AKH. Take a ride on the Ringstrasse on Tram 1 to map out every where you'd like to stop. You'll find that the buildings serve as incredible backdrops for the Christmas decor. At Rathaus (City Hall) there's a huge, lit tree, an ice skating rink, and even a stage for live music and performances. Don't forget to go inside the Rathaus for a beautiful view.

Don't miss St. Stephen's and the magnificent church. You really can't miss it, the steeple is that high. Take a walk along Kärtnerstrasse to see the incredible chandeliers. Check out the Altes AKH to see the University campus transformed into a Christmas wonderland. The museum quarter already boasts lovely architecture but it packs an added punch with the market in Maria-Theresa-Platz. This is also a good place to stop and have a traditional strudel.

For an over-the-top market have one outside a palace! Two opportunities for this at Schloss Belvedere and Schönbrunn. Both are beautiful and the palaces only add to the ambiance.

Christmas Market Dates in Austria: 

Your European Christmas Market Route

Fly into Germany – I suggest Frankfurt. This is a major airport hub and makes it easy to go to your next destination. From here, you can take a train or a car (I find cars are easiest and make it so you can stop off at any time). From here, take a train or car to Heidelberg, Germany. This is a typical Christmas market and will put you right in the spirit. Next, we're heading to France! Strasbourg is only about an hour and a half away from Heidelberg. After you get your fill of Glühwein our next stop is still in Alsace: Colmar, France. An actual gingerbread town, it's one of the cutest places I've ever stepped foot in!

After France, we'll cross another border and head into Switzerland. Here we'll go to Basel then Bern and if time permits we'll go to Lucerne and back north to Zurich. This itinerary is perfect if you have 5-7 days. Have more time, or just want to see more? Keep on going! From here you can go back into Germany for Munich's markets or go straight over to Austria. If you're driving, stop off in Salzburg. But since this is a long journey, I suggest flying to Vienna. Next, you can either head to Prague (my personal favorite) or east to Budapest.

Other great spots for Christmas are London, Nuremberg, Dresden, Paris, Copenhagen, Brussels, Budapest, and Zagreb.

What to eat at Christmas Markets

Schokokuss – the best way to describe this dessert is to take marshmallow fluff, then cover it with chocolate, and eat a dozen. Really, these are inexpensive and are so light and fluffy. I get one almost every time I go to a Christmas market.

Bratwurst – Authentic German food is bratwurst and Rostbratwurst roasting continually. Each Christmas market does it a bit differently so try one wherever you go. You can get it with bread and I always load up on mustard and onions.

Kartoffellpuffer – Take potatoes, fry them. It sounds simple but they are absolutely divine. Usually served with applesauce (weird but good) or garlic sauce. Give these a try!

Gingerbread – Also known as Lebkucken, you'll find both soft and hard gingerbread sold. They also like to sell it in heart shapes, wrapped in plastic, with words written on the cookie. I can't say these are very tasty, but they are pretty!

Crepes – If you're in the mood for something sweet this is the perfect Christmas market food. Rolled up with Nutella, cinnamon, sugar, or honey, anyone can get their fill from this simple classic.

Frikadella – One of my favorite foods at the Christmas markets are these hamburgers made with pork. Usually served with onions and mustard they make for the perfect hearty meal. Don't forget to grab some fries or pommes frites!

Candied nuts – the perfect warm Christmas market treat to pop in your mouth as you amble from stall to stall. These fragrant nuts will make you whip your head around as you walk past! You can also try roasted chestnuts aka “maroni” if you'd like as well.

Germknödel – This popular round dumpling is a German classic and usually filled with jam and topped with vanilla cream sauce. It's not overly sweet but a nice addition to your mulled wine.

Glühwein – You cannot go to the Christmas market without glühwein! I'm totally addicted to this hot, mulled wine made with spices. It will keep you warm inside as you drink this sweet liquid. Some markets also serve Feuerzangenbowle which is a mixture of punch and glühwein and topped with a rum-soaked sugar cube then set on fire. Go ahead, order two. If you're alcohol free you can also order kinderpunsch!

What to buy at the Christmas Markets

Everything sheepskin is for sale – gloves, hats, rugs and more.

Keep your glühwein cup as a fun souvenir. If you want to keep with the alcohol trend, many stalls offer liqueurs in pretty bottles that are an excellent gift.

Most markets have their own traditions and things for sale. For example, in Nuremberg they sell dolls made of dates! Most items for sale at Christmas markets are handmade and high quality. You won't necessarily find the cheapest items but you will find something special that will last.

Everyone deserves a winter wonderland break and Europe's Christmas markets make for the perfect magical escape. Christmas markets in Europe are some of the best memories of my life, and I'm already counting down the dates until next year!

Whether you are wanting to plan a Christmas Market road trip itinerary or just want to see my route, this guide will share what we did, where we stayed, and my recommendations for the best things to do.

A note: the best way to see the Christmas markets, in my opinion, is via a River cruise. You don't have to worry about hotels, parking, driving, etc. But having been to over 100 Christmas markets I want to share my guides with you 🙂

Traveling through Europe at Christmas makes me feel like a kid again. I get those excited butterflies and anticipation like I'm waiting for Santa to come down the chimney.

Christmas Market Tips

For this particular trip, I was traveling with my mom in Germany and France. We flew from Dallas to Frankfurt, picked up a rental car, and headed straight to Cologne. I'm ALWAYS asked about rental cars. Yes, Europe does have excellent public transportation, but I personally love renting a car for ease of travel and not having to wait.

Especially for visiting some of the smaller towns, it's just a lot easier. Plus, you're on your own schedule and can pull off wherever you need! Like we did when it started snowing in Germany!

I've traveled Europe extensively for the past 10 years, so this guide will give you the best tips on experiencing Christmas markets and my itinerary for a fabulous trip.

There is so much that goes into planning an epic trip abroad, especially during the holidays! With my European Christmas market road trip itinerary, it will hopefully make your travel planning process a breeze.

How long should you plan for a trip? This will of course depend on what you want to see and do, we spent about 11 days traveling which is a wonderful trip that was jam-packed with Christmas markets, museums, sightseeing, and great food.

Don't have 11 days? That's okay! I'll share the cities that you need to explore, what you should definitely see/do, and how long it takes to travel from city to city.

You can absolutely see a lot in less time! One week is still plenty of time to see and do a lot, you might just want to cut out a few stops along the way.

Now while we were traveling we did have to drastically change our plans since Christmas markets were canceled in some cities. But since we were flexible, and had a car, we were able to re-route our trip! And it was so worth it.

Many will tell you to book hotels ahead of time, and I agree, but make sure the cancellation policy is flexible, especially if you anticipate there might be changes along the way. We were going to spend more time in Germany, but since the markets were canceled, we ended up staying longer in France and getting last minute hotels.

Our European Christmas Market Road Trip Itinerary

Here's a brief look at our stops on our 10-day trip.

1. Cologne
2. Aachen
3. Monschau
4. Trier
5. Metz
6. Ribeauvillé
7. Kayersberg
8. Eguisheim
9. Riquewihr
10. Colmar
11. Strasbourg
12. Baden-Baden
13. Heidelberg
14. Frankfurt

If that seems like a lot… it's because it is! With a car and a can do attitude, along with a plan, you really can see and do a lot! To me, this didn't feel rushed. I was traveling with my mom and she kept up as well. I do tend to pack in a lot when I travel, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

While there are 14 cities listed, some are so small, we saw multiple in a day. Here was our trip itinerary:

Day 1: Flew into Frankfurt and explored Cologne (2 hour drive from Frankfurt to Cologne)

Day 2: Cologne, drove to Aachen (1 hour drive from Cologne to Aachen)

Day 3: Aachen

Day 4: Aachen, drove to Monschau (45 minute drive) and explored Monschau, drove to Trier, Christmas Market in Trier at night (Monschau to Trier is about an hour and a half drive)

Day 5: Trier, drove to Metz, Christmas markets at night in Metz (1 hour, 15 minute drive from Trier to Metz)

Day 6: Metz, drove to Ribeauvillé, explored Ribeauvillé (Our longest drive of the trip, 2 hours and 18 minutes from Metz to Ribeauvillé, since you're going through the Vosges mountains)

Day 7: Explored Kayersberg, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, drove to Colmar (all of these towns are within 30 minutes of one another!)

Day 8: Colmar, drove to Strasbourg (1 hour to drive from Colmar to Strasbourg)

Day 9: Strasbourg, drove to Baden-Baden (45 minute drive from Strasbourg to Baden-Baden)

Day 10: Baden-Baden, stop in the Black Forest, drove to Heidelberg (an hour drive from Baden-Baden to Heidelberg)

Day 11: Heidelberg and drove to Frankfurt (1-hour drive from Heidelberg to Frankfurt)

Our total drive time was about 14 hours in 11 days. To me, this is perfect, and didn't at all feel like we were in the car too much.

Renting a Car

Something to note about renting a car. It's definitely doable. I've driven in over 35 countries in Europe. If I can, so can you. The drawback here is the parking. We often dealt with long wait times because of busy Christmas markets. Which, is why I recommend a river cruise!

I recommend using a budget website like Priceline or Hotwire to find a rental car. However, I avoid car rental places like Thrifty and Budget! I rented a car with Sixt and thought the customer service was great.

As soon as we landed in Frankfurt I was able to get the rental car at the airport and drive it for the length of our trip. I returned it back to the airport in Frankfurt at the end of our 11 days.

Now, you can sometimes drop off your rental car at a different location, but usually it needs to be within the same country. Keep that in mind when renting.

I don't usually add car rental insurance, since I have insurance already.

I ended up paying about $800 in total with taxes and fees to rent a car.

Stop 1: Cologne

Christmas markets are a European tradition that date back to the 13th century, and Cologne is one of the most famous Christmas market destinations in Germany. The markets in Cologne are spread throughout the city with over-the-top decor, themed markets, and unbeatable Christmas spirit.

The Kölner Christkindelsmärik is held every year usually from November 18 until December 23rd, with more than 100 stalls selling everything from organic food to traditional German decorations. The most popular stall is undoubtedly the Bratwurst stand, where you can buy freshly grilled sausages with delicious mustard and toppings.

Some of my favorite markets are:

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) – this is the most popular market and is held in front of the dazzling Cologne Cathedral with a stage for music, a gigantic, sparkling Christmas tree, and plenty of beautiful stalls in the Roncalliplatz.

Angel Market – This beautiful market is located at Neumarkt and features pretty white stalls with dark shingled roofs and a myriad of stars. There's a beautiful carousel and plenty of great treats and Glühwein. Watch for the angels riding horseback handing out candy to kids!

Heinzel's Winter Fairytale – This is just a sensational spot with ice skating, sparkly decorations, lavishly decorated stalls, and a festive atmosphere. Cologne’s “Heinzelmännchen” legend is one of my favorites. The Heinzelmännchen are friendly household spirits that are used throughout the market as decor. You'll also find lots of wood crafts here.

Nicholas Village – I absolutely ADORE this beautiful market! You're greeted with a talking moose, joyous Christmas music, and hot Kartofelpufer (see what to eat at a Christmas Market here). Located in front of the beautiful and historic Hahnentorburg, you can sip Glühwein out of a boot!

There are 7 markets throughout the city and I recommend you explore them all! On our first day, we explored the Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market, Heizel's and Kolner Hafen- Weihnachtsmarkt.

On our second day in Cologne, we toured the Cologne Cathedral. Here is not only an incredibly impressive cathedral, but you'll also find the three wise men's bones preserved! The famous Shrine of the Three Kings is a spectacular gold box! The cathedral alone is an entire day trip in itself!

The city is filled with great history, beautiful churches and lovely cafe shops. It's one of my favorite cities, especially during the holiday season – you'll feel like you're in a real-life Christmas movie!

We also continued exploring the Christmas markets, the Angel Market and Nicholas Village. Then that night drove on to stop 2!

Stop 2: Aachen

I can't believe I lived in Germany for 3 years and never visited Aachen! This city has been named as having some of the best Christmas markets in Europe and it's easy to see why. Aachen is a spa town and borders both Belgium and the Netherlands. Our plan was to visit both Belgium and The Netherlands on this trip but we decided to skip and stay in France and Germany, However, you can easily head to Liege, Belgium, and Maastricht, The Netherlands. Being on the border gives it a certain feeling of worldliness.

Charlemagne constructed a monumental palace complex of buildings which is now where the Christmas Market takes place. Around 800 A.D., the Aachen Cathedral was built, then later a Gothic chancel. The Domschatzkammer (treasury) houses medieval relics including Charlemagne's shrine, which was erected over his burial place in 814 A.D.

The city has a rich history and a wonderful atmosphere during the Christmas season. Aachen is also home to the Cathedral of Aachen, which is a beautiful cathedral and one of the oldest in Europe.

I recommend visiting the Charlemagne Center which tells the history of the city of Aachen and Charlemagne. Aachen was the 2nd biggest city in Germany, after Cologne in 1250, but WWII devastated the town. Now, though it's not as big as it was before, the beautiful architecture and rich history, along with the Christmas markets, make it a wonderful destination.

I recommend spending two days here (we spent two nights here) exploring the town – it's very walkable, taking in the Christmas markets, and exploring the cathedral and museums.

Stop 3: Monschau

As we left Aachen the snow started falling in great, big, fat flakes! It was stunning. We meandered our way to the stunning town of Monschau. Monschau, a town in the Eifel region of Germany is a charming and picturesque destination with endless half-timbered architecture and a river running through it.

Monschau was originally built around a castle and offers a bevy of beautiful buildings and a charming setting for strolling. The Christmas market here is also very pretty, full of traditional German food and drink, crafts, decorations, and music! I highly recommend exploring Monschau if you're ever in Western Europe during winter time – it's absolutely beautiful!

It's a short stop and a very walkable town. Just get lost and explore!

As we drove out of Monschau we stopped in the forest nearby to see the lightly falling snow and take a few pictures! This would also be a fantastic place for a hike.

Stop 4: Trier

After Monschau we drove to Trier, about an hour and a half drive. I've traveled to Trier in the summer before so it was nice to see it for Christmas. We spent the evening at the Christmas market, and the morning exploring the town.

It was a cold winter evening in Trier, Germany. The Christmas market was broken into two and stretched across the main square where I had just walked up to get some mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. It was busy with people milling about grabbing their favorite holiday decorations or chit-chatting with friends while enjoying warm drinks or delicious food.

The Christmas Market in Trier is one of the oldest in Germany and is set up in the medieval main square by the incredible Trier Cathedral. Nearly 100 decorated booths sell delicious Langos, mulled wine and arts and crafts.

Trier is a town in Germany with a rich history and culture.

Trier was the oldest Roman city in Europe, founded by Emperor Augustus of Rome. It's also where the first Christian bishopric outside Palestine was established, by Saint Helena of Constantinople around 300 AD. During the Middle Ages it became one of the most important cities in Europe and it remains an important site for trade and education today.

I recommend visiting Trier Cathedral – its Gothic architecture dates back to about 1300 A.D., making it one of the most impressive churches in Western Europe! The cathedral contains numerous pieces from before then as well, including an altar that is said to be over 1,300 years old. There are plenty of Roman ruins and beautiful palaces throughout the town. Some highlights are the Porta Nigra, Karl Marx House, the Roman Amphitheater, Aula Palatina, and Kurfürstlicher Palace.

Stop 5: Metz

I was pleasantly surprised at how much there is to do in Metz! The first stop on our tour was the Cathedral Saint-Étienne de Metz, which dates back to the 11th century. Inside are beautiful stained glass windows that were built by famous artists like Marc Chagall and Jean Cocteau. Metz has plenty of other places worth visiting as well – Notre Dame d'Auschwitz, the modern art center Centre Pompidou-Metz, and Le Temple Neuf is a beautiful church that looks more like a castle.

Like other larger cities, the Christmas market is spread throughout the city. Not only are there markets, but there are also the magical light displays, “Sentiers des Lanternes“, throughout. I recommend stopping by the cathedral at the tourism office to get a map of each of the markets and places for light displays.

Next to the Cathedral is a neon Ferris wheel along with a market. You can find gourmet food markets on Place de la Comédie.

I also recommend the traditional Christmas market at Place Saint Louis, the Place de la République-Esplanade with the Christmas pyramid, Place d’Armes J-F Blondel with a beautiful light display, and Place Saint Jacques for great food. See all the Christmas markets here.

On our way out of Metz the next day, we stopped at Porte des Allemands, the original fortress and gatehouse to the city of Metz. It's a quick and easy stop.

Next, we took our longest drive of the trip from Metz to Ribeauvillé.

Stop 6: Ribeauvillé

This was my favorite and most shocking stop on on trip! Ribeauvillé is a beautiful, festive town in Alsace, France with a rich history and culture. It's also known for its TRUE medieval Christmas market! This tiny village packs a punch with beauty, spirit, and fun. Everyone in the town gets in on the traditional Christmas market.

The Ribeauvillé Christmas Market is the perfect place to get into the winter spirit. The market stretches from Place du Temple to Place Saint-Louis and has more than 100 booths of all sizes selling delicious mulled wine, food, arts and crafts, ornaments and souvenirs. You'll be able to get lost among the stalls while enjoying traditional French food like scalloped potatoes with cheese or strolling through the medieval streets admiring holiday decorations while listening to live music. You might even see a camel or two strolling the street!

Just park and walk around the town! Prepare to be entertained by the street performers, acrobats, stilt walkers, and more. You even turn in your money for some beads to pay for your Vin Chaud (mulled wine!). Stick around at night for strange creatures from fairy tales and legends will roam the street!

Warm your hands by the fire logs in the middle of the street, follow the parade of lights or have traditional cider mashed by hand with a huge stone grinder. This was truly one of my favorite places I've ever been!

Ribeauvillé is a great stop on your European adventure because it's one of the most unique and beautiful towns with one of the best Christmas markets I've ever been to! Everyone in town is in costume, the food is delicious, and you get a taste of real, medieval specialties.

The Alsatian region is truly a gem and one of the best places for Christmas with a mix of German and French traditions.

Important note: the Ribeauvillé Christmas market is ONLY two weekends a year! So plan accordingly. Usually the first and second weekend of December.

Stop 7: Kayersberg

The next few stops were actually taking place over just one day since these towns are so small and easy to explore. Starting with Kayersberg.

Kayersberg is a small town on the outskirts of Colmar, France. It’s known for its medieval architecture and Christmas market.

Kayersberg is one of the most picturesque towns in Alsace with cobblestone streets, half-timbered buildings, and narrow alleys lined with shops selling all sorts of things from food to crafts to jewelry.

You will not be able to resist at all the delicious specialties, specifically, bredeles, their famous Christmas biscuits with almonds, nuts, anise, chocolate or vanilla. Sweet or salty kougelhopfs, which is a ring cake made with brioche, fruitcakes, or beraweckas, or little brioche men called mannalas!

We spent the morning here before driving just 15 minutes to Eguisheim.

Stop 8: Eguisheim

Eguisheim is the smallest of the Alsace towns I visited on this trip, but a gem and worth the stop! This picturesque town has tiny, narrow streets, sometimes even half streets laden with half-timbered buildings strewn with garlands, teddy bears, and more.

This is named one of the most beautiful cities in the Alsace with a beautiful village center tucked away from the hustle of the larger cities.

Eguisheim is nestled in the wine region, so all the Vin Chaud tastes delicious! If you're here at night, stick around for a tour from the Night Watchman who will tell you stories of Eguisheim's past!

Stop 9: Riquewihr

Of the three stops of our Alsace Christmas market tour today: Kayersberg, Eguisheim, and Riquewihr, Riquewihr was my favorite. The city is ablaze with twinkling lights and festive decorations.

You'll find an abundance of half-timbered, pastel-colored buildings, pretty streets, and a myriad of stalls selling your favorite Christmas treats.

Riquewihr is the smallest of the Alsace towns I visited on this trip, but a gem and worth the stop! This picturesque town has tiny, narrow streets, sometimes even half streets laden with half-timbered buildings strewn with garlands, teddy bears, and more.

We drove from Riquewihr on to Colmar so we'd have the day to explore Colmar, only about a 30-minute drive.

Stop 10: Colmar

I've been to Colmar many times and I never tire of this fairytale city that was the inspiration for Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Colmar is a city in the heart of Alsace and it's surrounded by half-timbered buildings, cobblestone streets, and cozy cafes. It's a beautiful place to visit any time of the year but perfect for Christmas! There are six Christmas markets all within walking distance and each prettier than the next.

La Petite Venise is one of my favorite areas with delightful architecture curving around the water. Also here is one of my favorite restaurants in the region, Winstub de la Petite Venise. This Michelin star restaurant offers a 35 euro plat du jour that makes my mouth water just thinking about it! I've eaten here twice and it's just some of the best food you'll have in Europe.

The Christmas market is full of wooden chalets with beautifully illuminated streets and plenty of photo opportunities.

On our way to Strasbourg, we stopped at the huge Koenigsbourg Castle, a medieval castle on top of a mountain in the Alsace with a great view of the region. When we went it was nearing dusk and a cloud of fog engulfed the castle, so much so that we could barely see! We still enjoyed roaming around the impressive castle.

We drove to Strasbourg that evening to enjoy the wondrous lights of Strasbourg at night.

Stop 11: Strasbourg

A visit to the Alsace just isn't complete without a stop in Strasbourg. The largest city and capital of the region, Strasbourg is one of my favorite cities. It's home to the European Parliament, an incredible cathedral, and is one of the oldest (and prettiest) towns in all of France.

During Christmas, Strasbourg comes alive with decor, lights, and a magical setting of joyous food and wine.

The Christmas markets in Strasbourg are some of the best in Europe with a towering Christmas tree (almost 100 feet high), festive lights, and lovely stalls selling all sorts of goodies. I could wander around these markets for hours! The Christmas tree at Place Kleber the symbol of “Strasbourg, Capital of Christmas” is also the tallest decorated Christmas tree in Europe

I urge you to make sure you leave enough time to see Strasbourg both during the day and at night to really get a feel for its magic. There are 300 stalls spread throughout the city and some of the best light displays spread throughout the streets!

Stop 12: Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is an elegant city famed for its spas and thermal baths.

The city is home to one of the most spectacular Christmas markets in Germany with around 200 stalls, featuring traditional wooden chalets selling local produce and festive trinkets. Unfortunately, this year's Christmas market is closed.

There's also a famous casino here. But my favorite part about this city is its proximity to the beautiful Black Forest!

We took a short drive from Baden-Baden up to the beautiful ski resort Mehilskopf. The snow on the ground made for a picturesque setting.

Stop 13: Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a small city with a beautiful castle and a well-preserved 16th-century town. I actually lived in Heidelberg for 3 years so I know my way around this city very well! I adore the Christmas market here that's also spread throughout the main street, Hauptstrasse.

The market is small but charming with a lot of local vendors selling their wares. I also love the market by the ice skating rink that's right under the castle. Such a beautiful spot! Stop 14: Frankfurt

We drove an hour from Heidelberg to Frankfurt which is a more industrial city with skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. However, the Christmas market here is a traditional feel with a large square in the center of the city.

Frankfurt is SO underrated for Christmas. Absolutely beautiful, great stalls, food, and a super gorgeous town square!

The “Christkindlesmarkt” and has around 180 stalls selling all sorts of goodies from gluhwein to sausages.

Frankfurt is also home to the Christmas markets at the Römerberg, a beautiful square in the heart of downtown. Here you can find a Christmas tree that's over 10 meters high (about 32 feet) and walk along the shops selling traditional German crafts.

Where to stay

We stayed at mostly budget properties, all-around $200 or less a night with easy access for parking and to the city centers.

Cologne – Lowenbrau Cologne: My favorite stay! This is right in the heart of the old town and a beautiful place to stay with a great view, a great restaurant, and a surprisingly budget-friendly price.

Aachen – B&B Hotel Aachen-City – I've stayed at many B&Bs, they are simple, and budget-friendly but practical hotels.

Trier – Holiday Inn Express – Also a big fan of Holiday Inn Express, simple but good hotels.

Metz – Campanile Metz Centre Gare. Easy place to explore Metz with free street parking.

Colmar – Hotel Ibis – the most budget stay.

Strasbourg – Holiday Inn Express Strasbourg.

Baden-Baden – Aparthotel Volgergasse, a bit pricier but this stay is the most luxurious! A full apartment, fireplace, beautiful views, and two full bedrooms.

Heidelberg – Hotel Panorama – a great hotel at the top of the Hauptstrasse.

Frankfurt – Moxy Airport Hotel – a great budget spot if you have an early morning flight.

Total Budget For Christmas Market Trip

When planning a European Christmas market trip, budgeting is a key factor to ensure you can enjoy all the magical experiences without unnecessary stress. Here's a breakdown of the major costs for our 10-day itinerary through Germany and France:

Flights

Our roundtrip flights from Dallas to Frankfurt cost approximately $900 per person, but prices can vary widely based on when you book and your departure city. Consider using flight comparison tools and booking well in advance to secure the best deals.

Accommodation

We prioritized budget-friendly hotels with easy parking and central locations, spending around $1,800 total for 10 nights. This averages to about $180 per night, but your costs might fluctuate depending on the season and your preferences for accommodations.

I will be straightforward here, we stayed in budget hotels. These are not fancy hotels with amenities. These are hotels like Ibis and Hotel B&B. Looking back I would prefer something a bit nicer.

Transportation

Renting a car gave us the freedom to explore smaller towns and take scenic detours. The car rental cost us $800 for 11 days, including taxes and fees. Gasoline and tolls added another $200 to our total. Then there were tolls (they are quite pricey in France and parking fees) which added another $150. If you're opting for public transport or a river cruise, costs might differ but can also provide savings in other areas.

Food and Drinks

We indulged in a mix of street food, casual dining, and the occasional sit-down meal, spending about $60–$200 per day for two people. That totals around $700–$900 for the trip. Christmas market treats like glühwein, bratwurst, and crepes were surprisingly affordable and a major highlight.

Activities

Most Christmas markets are free to enter, but additional costs came from visiting attractions like museums and cathedrals, which averaged around $350 for the trip. Optional activities, such as ice skating or Ferris wheel rides, added a little extra fun for an additional $50–$100.

Souvenirs and Shopping

From handcrafted ornaments to locally made gifts, we set aside $300 for souvenirs. The markets offer unique and budget-friendly options for gifts that make perfect mementos.

Total Cost

All in all, the total cost was roughly $5,750–$7,000. Adjusting for your travel group size, itinerary, and personal spending habits, you can plan a magical Christmas market trip to fit your budget.

Tips for Budget-Friendly Travel

• Book Early: Flights, hotels, and car rentals are typically cheaper when reserved in advance.
